2022 Volkswagen Jetta vs. 2022 Hyundai Elantra: Power and Value Just Keep Going Up

We are happy to announce that the Jetta is updated for the 2022 model year with a new engine and other features. The refresh meets the goal of elevating the value of the vehicle family, including the sporty Jetta GLI. Every Jetta buyer receives a fresh design, better technology, and more access to highly-desired driver assistance features.

To add perspective, it is important to compare the updated Jetta to the competition. Here, we line it up against the 2022 Hyundai Elantra.

The 2022 Volkswagen Jetta is a better performer

The exciting new engine delivers turbocharged power to the Jetta, reaching 147 horsepower and 184 lb-ft of torque. The advanced design results in outstanding fuel economy and low-speed torque. Buyers can opt for a six-speed manual or eight-speed automatic transmission.

In comparison, the standard Elantra retreats to a 2.0L four-cylinder that outputs a reduced 132 lb-ft of torque. Of course, the Elantra's fuel economy rates as low as 7.1 L/100 km in the city and 5.5 L/100 km on the highway, but expect the Jetta to be close when data is available, even with all its power and punch. You could look into the Elantra Hybrid if you really want to save fuel, but this extreme only outputs 104 horsepower. The Jetta has the most exciting combination of power and economy.

The 2022 Jetta GLI variant is all about performance and style

The 2022 Jetta GLI is powered by the 2.0-liter engine. Owners will enjoy a turbocharged output of 228 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque. This creates a new driving experience that most compact sedans don't offer. The GLI also features a standard six-speed manual transmission, but you can upgrade to a seven-speed DSG dual-clutch automatic transmission for even quicker shifting.

Comparatively, the Elantra N Line attempts to turn up the heat with a 1.6L turbocharged engine that produces 201 horsepower and 195 lb.-ft. of torque, but it falls quite short to the GLI.

Inside, the Jetta is all about signature German engineering and style. It delivers comfort and technology like only a German sedan can, and rivals like the Elantra fail at emulating this unique feel.
