2021 Volkswagen Jetta vs. 2022 Honda Civic: The Jetta Increases Value, Power and Efficiency

One of the best-kept secrets in Canada is likely in a driveway nearby, but it won't be a secret for long. The 2021 Jetta is rising to the top of the compact sedan segment with outstanding features, capability and pricing. Each Jetta also includes outstanding response that is fit for many roads, fun agility, and advanced cockpit, and safety to help you drive with more confidence.

Here, we compare the 2021 Jetta to a tough competitor, the 2022 Honda Civic. The differences will surprise you.

The 2021 Volkswagen Jetta is an MSRP winner

For decades, the Honda Civic was hard to beat in price. Not anymore. The Jetta lineup features a starting MSRP of $21,595, well below the Civic's at $24,465. When budgets count, this is significant. Each Jetta trim has a lower MSRP than its Civic counterpart.

The Jetta's top (non-GLI) model—the Execline—starts at $28,955, which is well below the Touring's MSRP of over $30,000.

Adding to its value, the Jetta is covered with a four-year warranty. That is 1 year and 20,000 km more than the Civic.

The 2021 Volkswagen Jetta features the best torque and turbo power

Most Jetta trims feature a 1.4 TSI turbocharged engine that outputs 147 horsepower and a comparison-leading 184 lb-ft of torque. The Honda Civic's primary engine is a 2.0-litre four-cylinder that has a slight horsepower edge at 158, but torque goes down to the 138 lb-ft level. The Jetta has 46 more lb-ft of torque than the Jetta, and it makes a significant difference in traffic, on grades, or many other places.

If you desire more performance from the Jetta, the GLI offers 2.0-litre turbo four-cylinder with 228 horsepower and a serious 258 lb-ft of torque. The Civic's top powertrain is found in the Touring trim, with a 1.5-litre turbo four-cylinder that peaks at 180 horsepower. The GLI is certainly worth its value when you need the best access to driving fun.

The Jetta also holds the best fuel consumption rating in the comparison—5.8 L/100 km (highway) on certain models. Both vehicles have a combined rating of 6.9 L/100 km. However, the Jetta gets the slight edge in efficiency.
